Depending on where you live, most areas in the United States have parts of the year when it is just not so practical to workout outdoors. In the northern regions that time is usually in the winter when it is too cold to go outside and in the south it might be during the summer when it could be too hot to workout outside.
As a result, many people look to do some type of exercise indoors and people often think that this will compromise the quality of the workout. But you don't have to reduce the intensity of your workout just because you are doing it inside.
There are a number of machines that help you accomplish your goals and you can remain inside while doing so. Included in these options is the treadmill, the elliptical, and the stair climber.
The treadmill offers you the opportunity to get a run in without having to be concerned about the weather conditions, be it too hot or too cold. You will be able to adjust the intensity and speed very easily and perhaps achieve an even better workout than if you went running outside.
Another advantage of the treadmill is that it is a softer surface than if you go running outside on the streets which can be tough on your joints and knees. However, it can sometimes get quite boring to run on a treadmill if you are used to running outside.
Another option is the elliptical which provides a great workout without any of the impact that happens when you are running. There is no outdoor exercise like it so you aren't really giving up anything because there is no alternative in the first place.
You can also go with the stair climber which gives you a very intense workout. Many people get winded after just a few minutes on one of these machines so be sure to build into it gradually.
So try out these machines and decide which one you like best and which one gives you the best workout. Then you can make use of it during the more inclement weather.
Remember that you can get just as good of a workout indoors as you can outdoors if you are committed to it. If you get bored, try reading a book while you go and in this way you are killing two birds with one stone.
